Dowry System in Nepal

Dowry is the thing which the parents give at their daughter's wedding.It may be anything such as TV,furniture, radio, household appliances, motorbike, VCD, money etc.Giving and taking dowry is not good system; however,it has been a part of our tradition. The parents give dowry to their daughter on order to get her a good husband and make her future life easier.But we can see its bad influences in the society.Some of the daughter in law are either killed or physically and mentally tortured because they didn't bring enough dowries as their in-laws expected.Moreover, in order to give dowry,the poor parents are compelled to mortgage or sell their property,the land.
